What Causes Dry Skin?                                                                                                      Many factors can cause dry skin including:                                                                    Weather– When temperatures and humidity levels plummet, it can cause our skin to lose moisture                                                                                                                            Heat– Central heating, fireplaces and heaters all reduce humidity and dry your skin out        Hot baths and showers – Taking long, hot showers or baths can cause dry skin              Swimming– spending a long time in chlorinated pools can strip our skin of its natural oils and cause dry skin                                                                                                              Harsh soaps and detergents– Many soaps, detergents and shampoos strip moisture from the skin, as they are formulated to remove oil

Symptoms of dry skin                                                                                                      Skin feeling tight                                                                                                                  Skin that looks and feels rough                                                                                      Itching                                                                                                                                        Flaking                                                                                                                              Scaling                                                                                                                            Peeling                                                                                                                                      Fine lines or cracks                                                                                                                  Redness                                                                                                                      Sensitivity

Conditions that cause dry skin                                                                                          Dry skin can also be a symptom of a long-term skin condition.                                  Eczema; A skin condition that makes the skin itchy, red, dry, and cracked. It can affect any part of the body, but most commonly affects the backs or fronts of the knees, outside or inside the elbows, and around the neck, hands, cheeks, or scalp.                                Ichthyosis; There are 20 different types of Ichthyosis. Some types are inherited from birth, whereas others are acquired during adulthood. This condition causes widespread and persistent thick, dry, ‘fish-scale’ skin.                                                                                Pruritus; Also known as itchy skin, pruritus is common in older adults as skin tends to become drier with age and can be caused or worsened by dry skin.                                  Common symptoms include redness and skin that is dry, cracked, leathery or blistered.

Why is moisturising important?                                                                                      Moisturising our skin is important to replenish our skin’s protective barrier, which prevents bacteria and germs from penetrating our skin and causing infection. If our skin becomes dehydrated, it compromises the following functions:                                                          Protection– Providing a barrier against harmful germs that can cause infection            Preventing dryness– The natural fats that maintain your skin’s protective barrier (known as lipids) regulate moisture and minimise water loss to prevent the skin from becoming tight or dry                                                                                                                      Preventing bacteria growth– Moisture balances the skin which prevents the invasion of bacteria and fungi                                                                                                        Regeneration– Moisturised skin can generate new skin cells far easier than dry skin  Moisturising our skin regularly helps to keep our skin hydrated and it’s protective barrier strengthened against infection.

What is an emollient?                                                                                                        Dry skin happens when the skin’s natural protective barrier is weakened. This can cause moisture loss and allow irritants to penetrate the skin, which leaves the skin itchy and flaky. Emollients are moisturising treatments that are applied directly to the skin to provide hydration and strengthen this natural barrier. They create a protective film across the skin to trap in moisture. Emollients are used to soothe and relieve dry skin conditions such as eczema, pruritus, and ichthyosis by keeping the skin hydrated and flexible to avoid cracks and discomfort.
