A migraine is a headache that causes moderate to severe symptoms and is usually felt as a throbbing pain on 1 side of the head. Migraines are a common health problem affecting around 1 in every 5 women and 1 in every 15 men. They usually start in early adulthood. There are several types of migraine including:
The main symptom of a migraine is a painful headache on 1 side of the head. It usually causes a throbbing sensation that becomes worse when you move and prevents you from carrying out normal activities. Other symptoms that can be caused by a migraine can include:
Migraine symptoms can last between 4 hours and 3 days, but you may still feel tired for up to a week afterwards.
Around 1 in 3 people who experience migraines have temporary warning symptoms, known as aura before the migraine starts. These include:
Aura symptoms usually develop over a period of around 5 minutes and can last for up to an hour. Some people may experience aura followed by only a mild headache or no headache at all.
It is not known what exactly causes a migraine, but they’re thought to be the result of abnormal brain activity that temporarily affect nerve signals, chemicals and blood vessels in the brain. Although it’s is still unknown what causes this change in brain activity, it is possible that your genes can make you more likely to experience migraines as a result of a specific trigger. The active ingredient in Nurofen is ibuprofen. It belongs to a group of medicines known as Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Ibuprofen provides relief by reducing hormones that cause pain and swelling in the body and usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes to work if you take it orally.
To reduce the risk of side effects, do NOT take this product with other NSAID containing products (e.g. aspirin, ibuprofen). Nurofen may affect or be affected by some other medicines. Avoid using Nurofen if you are taking:

This product is for short term use only and you should take the lowest dose for the shortest time necessary to relieve your symptoms.
Take 1 caplet with water, up to three times a day as required. Leave at least four hours between doses. Do NOT take more than 3 caplets in 24 hours.
Do NOT take for longer than 10 days unless advised to do so by a medical professional if you are over the age of 18. For children and adolescents between 12 and 18 years, medical advice if this product is required for more than 3 days or if symptoms worsen.
Like all medicines, Nurofen can cause side effects, although not everybody will experience them. If you experience any of the following, discontinue use and seek immediate medical help:
