Norgalax Disposable Microenema is a simple-to-use gel that provides fast relief for the struggles and discomfort of constipation. This product may also be used if you need to clear your bowels before an examination, such as a colonoscopy.
Always use Norgalax Microenema exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / pharmacist has told you. To use, remove the cap and carefully press until a small amount of gel is lubricating the neck of the tube. Gently insert the neck into your back passage and squeeze until empty.
You should feel an effect within 20 minutes, so it’s advisable to stay close by to a toilet until the product has worked. Likely, you will only need to use one tube, but if needed, you can use a second later on in the day. Prolonged use is not recommended, and if you’re still constipated after 5 days of using Norgalax Micoenema, you should speak to your GP.
Norgalax Microenema contains the active ingredient docusate sodium, which is a type of medicine called a laxative. It works by allowing water and fat to penetrate the hard, dry stools to make them softer and easier to pass.
Additionally, docusate sodium stimulates the nerves in the colon and rectum, making the muscles in the bowel contract more frequently. With this increased pressure, it shifts the stools through the colon to the rectum so your bowel can be emptied without straining.
Constipation isn’t just about not being able to go to the toilet - rather, it describes a collection of symptoms that include:
Hard, pellet-like stools
Excessive straining
A sensation that you are unable to go
A decrease in bowel movements
However, it’s important to remember that constipation is subjective to the individual, and it’s very normal to not have a daily bowel movement. The source of constipation varies, but it could be caused by medication, fibre, dehydration, stress, exercise, hormones, or ignoring the urge to go to the toilet.
This product should not be used for children aged 12 years or under. If your child is suffering from any discomfort caused by constipation, speak to a doctor for expert advice and suitable treatments.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, you must ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using any new medicine.
Norgalax Microenema may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not use this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or if you have any of the following:
Hemorrhoids (piles)
A tear in the back passage (anal fissure)
Bleeding or inflammation in the rectum or colon
If you have inflammatory bowel disease (such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease)
If you feel sick, have been sick in the last 24 hours, or if you have stomach pain
A blockage in the gut (intestinal obstruction)
Like all products, Norgalax Microenema may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness. Side effects may include pain or burning in the anal or rectal area, a rash and bleeding.
Prolonged or excessive use of laxatives may lead to diarrhoea, low potassium levels in the blood (hypokalaemia) and an imbalance of electrolytes in the body. It may also make constipation worse in the long term as your body will rely on the laxative.
For more information on potential side effects, refer to the patient information leaflet. If you experience any side effects, including any not included in the patient information leaflet, you can report them using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
