What is the difference between a cold and the flu?

Symptoms of a cold and the flu can be similar. Both the common cold and the flu can cause sore throats, coughing, sneezing and congestion. However, cold symptoms tend to appear more gradually, compared with the flu. When experiencing the common cold you may feel minor discomfort, but symptoms are usually mild and shouldn’t hinder you from getting on with your day. The flu causes more severe symptoms that can leave you feeling exhausted and very ill. It can also cause complications for certain people including the elderly and pregnant women, so it is important that those who are vulnerable to the virus get a flu jab every year to protect from the flu virus. Although there is no cure for the common cold, there are many steps you can take to look after yourself at home including:

• Drinking plenty of fluids
• Getting plenty of rest
• Using painkillers to relieve aches and discomfort

How can Lemsip Capsules help to relieve symptoms of cold and relief?

Lemsip Day and Night Capsules work to give you long-lasting relief to help you get through the day and sleep easy at night despite symptoms caused by the common cold or the flu. Both capsules contain paracetamol, which is a painkiller that can be used to treat headaches and sore throats and Phenylephrine which is a decongestant that can help to clear your airways so you can breathe easier. The day capsules contain caffeine to keep you powering through the day. The night capsules help to ease aches, fever and congestion, so you can get plenty of rest. 

How to use this product

This product should be taken exactly as described in the patient information leaflet. Always swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. Do NOT chew the capsules. If you symptoms persist for more than 3 days or worsen, consult your doctor or a pharmacist. 

Dosage

Day time: Take two red and yellow capsules every 4 - 6 hours uring the day to a maximum of 3 doses when necessary. Do NOT take more than 6 red and yellow capsules in any 24 hours

Night time: Take two blue and red capsules at night if needed

Do NOT take more than 8 capsules (4 doses) in any 24 hours. Do NOT give to children under 16 years of age. 

If you take more capsules than you should: talk to a doctor at once if you take too much of this medicine, even if you feel well. This is because paracetamol can cause delayed, serious liver damage. This medicine can cause difficulty in sleeping, restlessness, nervousness or mental confusion - do NOT drive or use machines if you are affected by any of these symptoms. 

When NOT to use Lemsip Cold and Flu Tablets

Do NOT take this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients (see ingredients tab for full list) or if:

• You have a serious heart condition
• You are taking or have taken within the last 14 days a medicine called a monoamine oxidase inhibitor, usually used to treat depression
• You are taking other sympathomimetic decongestants
• You have an enlarged prostate
• You have a history of pre-eclampsia

Speak to your doctor or a pharmacist BEFORE taking this medicine if:

• You have Raynaud’s syndrome 
• You have diabetes
• You have a problem with your liver or kidneys or a history of stomach ulcer
• You have non-cirrhotic liver disease
• You have closed-angle glaucoma 
• Pregnant or breast-feeding

Can Lemsip Max Capsules be taken with other medicines?

Speak to your doctor or a pharmacist BEFORE taking this product if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines. Do NOT take this product with:

• Paracetamol-containing products 
• Within 14 days of taking monoamine oxidase inhibitor, a medicine used to treat depression
• With other cough and cold medicines, as this could lead to overdose 

Speak to your doctor or a pharmacist if you are taking:

• Beta-blockers
• Tricyclic antidepressants 
• Any medicines that may impact the effect of paracetamol 

Always the label before administration to ensure this product is suitable for you. 

Can this product cause side effects?

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody will experience them. If you experience any of the following symptoms discontinue use immediately and seek medical attention:

• Allergic reactions 
• Blood disorders
• Stomach and gut disorder, such as feeling sick, being sick or abdominal discomfort
• Difficulty sleeping, restlessness, nervousness or mental confusion
• Caffeine, if taken close to bedtime, may interfere with sleep
• Difficulty passing urine
